The 4th Annual Virgin Pulse “Challenge Bowl” Kicks Off Today
November 22, 2013 / Corporate Wellness
For the fourth year in a row, local Alabama businesses are participating in the “Challenge Bowl,” (formerly known as the “Iron Bowl”), an activity-based competition. Employers participating in the Challenge Bowl recognize the importance of engaging employees with fun, social challenges to increase daily activity and Virgin Pulse is proud to be on board with these companies once again as the sponsor.
During the course of more than two weeks, nine companies will get moving to determine who takes home the Challenge Bowl Trophy – not to mention a year’s worth of bragging rights!
“We’ve been looking forward to defending our Challenge Bowl title all year,” said Jim Heslop, Chief Human Resources Executive at BBVA Compass, the reigning Challenge Bowl champions. “Our employees worked hard to bring the trophy home last year, and we’re all better off for it. We can only hope all of the participating companies have seen the benefits we have. Virgin Pulse has become a critical tool for engaging our employees in good health and, ultimately, improving their total quality of life. Since we started working with Virgin Pulse, we’ve seen noticeable improvements in activity, engagement and overall employee health.”
Taking on the reigning champs are employees from other local companies, including Buffalo Rock, Children’s of Alabama, CPSI, EBSCO, Norbord, Protective Life Corporation and Regions Bank. All will compete to take as many steps as possible, using their Virgin Pulse activity tracking devices to track all activity during the 16-day challenge, culminating on December 7. Last year, employees from competing companies took more than 1 billion combined steps – enough to circle the earth 23 times!
“EBSCO is thrilled to be a part of the Virgin Pulse Challenge Bowl for the third year in a row,” said Molly Bird, Health and Productivity Coordinator at EBSCO Industries, Inc. “This challenge promotes healthy competition among Birmingham-area companies, and our employees really get excited about participating. It’s also great to interact with other companies in our city and learn from their successes in the corporate wellness arena.”
For many of the companies participating, the Iron Bowl Challenge goes hand-in-hand the other programs and challenges they offer to employees in an effort to lead healthy life styles.
“Buffalo Rock has helped lead an employee health initiative over the last few years,” said Matthew Dent, President and CEO at Buffalo Rock. “We wanted to encourage our employee partners to take care of themselves and become more aware of their overall health. Going forward, Virgin Pulse will help our employees stay on track to become healthier and more active. The Iron Bowl challenge is a great way to get them involved and focused on living a healthy lifestyle.”
