6th Annual National Employee Wellness Month Challenge Participants Achieve 670 Times More Steps than 2014 World Cup Players Expected To Take
Alliant Energy and Nypro Packaging Outpace the Competition, Win the National Employee Wellness Month Annual Challenge
Framingham, Mass. - (July 8, 2014)
Virgin Pulse today announced that more than 200 companies and 70,000 employees participated in the sixth annual National Employee Wellness Month, demonstrating their commitment to employee health and well-being. Many participants competed in a three week step challenge, celebrating National Employee Wellness Month and showing their commitment to a healthy work culture. Combined, the challenge participants took nearly 12 billion steps, each averaging nearly 9,000 steps each per day – almost 670 times the total number of steps that will be taken in the 2014 World Cup!
The challenge put participants toe-to-toe, competing with other companies in the spirit of health to see which could rack up the most steps. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Alliant Energy in the Health Stars division and two-time winner Nypro Packaging in the Wellness Warriors division. Each company receives a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
“As a business we were faced with the rising cost of healthcare, and rather than push the added costs on to our employees and shareholders, we decided to get active and fight back,” said Paul Kayser, president of Nypro Packaging. “We brought the Virgin Pulse platform into our business three years ago to provide our employees with a tool that would empower them to take accountability for their health and wellbeing.”
Kayser added, “As a business we are continuously building upon our employee engagement strategy to drive personal and business results, all while having FUN. As we approached June, the excitement was already buzzing across our seven U.S. sites motivating team Nypro Packaging to dig deep to finish in the No. 1 seat on the National Employee Wellness Month Challenge leaderboard. It’s refreshing to see the camaraderie and collaboration of colleagues motivating each other to always put their best foot forward and consistently achieving the goal they set out to accomplish together…this became a cultural norm…it’s just what we do!”
“We take the health and welfare of our employees seriously. When they make choices to improve their health, it has a positive impact on their lives, the lives of their families and our business,” said Wayne Reschke, Vice President – Human Resources at Alliant Energy. “I am very proud of the commitment we showed by winning the National Employee Wellness Challenge through Virgin Pulse. The win is a fun way to celebrate wellness, but nothing compares to knowing our employees are taking action for their health.”
“I’m continuously blown away by the level of commitment National Employee Wellness Proud Supporters and their employees demonstrate year in and year out,” said Chris Boyce, CEO of Virgin Pulse. “In just three weeks, challenge participants amassed more steps than all of the soccer players competing in the World Cup this year are expected to take, a truly remarkable feat! Employers that recognize the importance of engaging in healthy lifestyles will remain a step ahead of their competition, driving their companies with energetic, productive employees. We’re exceptionally proud to work with so many of these wonderful organizations. Congratulations to Nypro Packaging and Alliant Energy, along with the rest of the participants!”
Created in 2009 by Virgin Pulse in partnership with the Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, National Employee Wellness Month is sponsored by these organizations along with the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease and WorldatWork. The initiative helps business leaders learn how companies successfully engage employees in healthy lifestyles. It showcases how companies can support employees by creating healthy cultures, improving their health and well-being while lowering healthcare costs and driving engagement. In conjunction with National Employee Wellness Month, employees and employers completed a survey examining how investing in employee’s well-being helps organizations drive engagement, company culture and recruiting. Results of the survey can be found here.
As part of National Employee Wellness Month, Virgin Pulse recognized the 2014 Healthies Award recipients. The Healthies awards celebrate the spirit of healthy, sustainable behavior by recognizing individuals for their efforts to improve and maintain their overall well-being and the associated milestones they’ve hit along the way.
