In this role you will wear many hats but your skills will be especially essential in the following:  

  • Responsible for designing, engineering, and managing delivery of Virgin Pulse Data Platform and architecture powered by products, platforms, tools, infrastructure, science, and analytics. 
  • The Vice President of Data Platform reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer and is part of the Senior Engineering leadership team.
  • Responsible for creating common and central data assets, and insights capabilities to deliver transformational value for our customers, partners, and internal organization. 
  • This role also will lead multiple transformation initiatives, drive strategy, and foster innovation.
  • This role will own and lead all the data platform initiatives – Data Lake Strategy & Governance, Data Engineering and Platform development, Business Analytics, Reporting & Insights, Data science and ML/AI models. 
  • Provides strategic oversight and implementation approaches for data management aligning with strategic business principles and roadmaps.
  • Provides data subject matter expertise to business and development groups and works closely with cross functional leaders across Virgin Pulse.
  • Evaluates new data management technologies and consistently generates new ideas.
  • Leads and manages a highly talented data platform organization with senior Engineering Directors, Architects, Data Engineering and Business Analytics teams with multiple development streams and objectives and an organization with 120+ engineers.
  • This role requires a strong, innovative leader that can independently create and implement a strategic vision in transforming, enhancing, and building the Virgin Pulse data platform and strategy in partnership with the Chief Technology Officer.

What you bring to the team

In order to represent the best of what we have to offer, you come to us with a multitude of positive attributes including:

  • 15+ years of experience, with 10+ years' leadership experience, including experience leading large, cross-functional teams including data engineering and data analytics.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, business administration, finance, economics, statistics, or equivalent degree related field preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of data architecture, data platform, data management practices and processes.
  • Prior Data Lake and Data platform strategy   and ownership experience required.’
  • Experienced or conversant in emerging tools like data cloud SaaS offerings, data lake technologies, columnar and NoSQL databases, predictive analytics, data visualization, and unstructured data.
  • Advanced skills in data modeling from conceptualization to database optimization.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and communication skills required to negotiate internally, often at a senior level- must have ability to synthesize, develop and present clear and concise recommendations.
  • Has a strategic perspective; looks toward the broadest possible view of an issue or challenge; can easily pose future scenarios; can think broadly; and can discuss multiple aspects and impacts of issues and project them into the future.
  • Has capability and experience to define a well thought out organizational strategy and execute on an associated operational plan.
  • Leadership skills: individual leadership, change leadership, mentorship, motivation, coaching and development, and the ability to galvanize support.
  • Highly detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and able to embrace change for a fast-growing organization.
  • Ability to manage senior staff as well as manage staff remotely across multiple locations, time zones and cultures.
  • Strong understanding of agile software development processes 
  • Leads data roadmap and model discussions and development with Architecture, Products and Engineering.
  • Strong talent focus and ability to successfully recruit and develop experts from leading organizations.
  • Ability to communicate a compelling vision and inspire others to deliver on an ambitious, complex, roadmap.
  • Ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels within an organization, from the most technical engineer to the savviest business / executive leader.
  • Possess uncompromising ethics and unwavering integrity.
  • Champion of high standards, pushes for progress, embraces change, and challenges the status quo.
  • Experience in leading large cross functional initiatives and an organization with 100+ engineers.
  • Stays up to date with industry trends and brings industry knowledge while exemplifying a transformational mindset.
  • Experience in Healthcare domain would be a plus.
  • Experience in AWS cloud technologies would be a plus.

Our technology sets us apart

Our cloud platform is using an exciting mixture of technologies to provide millions of end users with rich experiences in native mobile and responsive browser platforms built in Angular at scale.  These highly scalable, reliable applications are supported by a suite of services built on APIs and real-time processors leveraging Spring Framework technologies.  Our platforms consume billions of activities, in various forms, which drive our analytics and machine learning platforms.  We leverage backend systems, with AWS at their core, which support a diverse set of workloads including Aurora RDS, ElastiCache, SNS/SQS, Kafka, EC2/ECS/EKS, S3, CloudFront, and Personalize.  We manage these services with infrastructure as code technologies to ensure consistency and reliability.


Continuous Integration and Deployment is part of our DNA.  We structure our applications as microservices and manage each deployment pipeline using containers, GitLab, and Harness.  We strive for layered approach to unit, integration, functional tests to allow for lower risk releases at rates 100s of times per day to multiple environments.


You’ll be working on a platform that serves:

  • Several million users with nearly 50% use daily
  • 75 billion API calls and transactions a year spread across 35 services
  • An engaging native mobile platform driving 85% of user traffic
  • Hundreds of terabytes of data spread across multiple transactional and analytical stores

Engineers at Virgin Pulse work in small autonomous teams of technical leads, product owners, project managers, designers, and engineers collaborating with each other, across teams, to deliver unique solutions and products to the portfolio.  As part of our team, you bring to the table your technical and leadership skills to help us build the latest technology in health and wellness platforms.

Security Competencies:

Work to ensure system and data security is maintained at a high standard, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the Virgin Pulse application is not compromised. Ensure industry best practice coding standards are adhered to ensure all code developed at Virgin Pulse is free from bugs and security vulnerabilities, such as those defined and published by OWASP.
