Who are you?

As a crucial member of the design group, you will help shape our global health and wellbeing product by managing individual contributors in the UX Design function. Our software platform spans from the web to wearables, from iOS to Android and other connected devices and reaches more than 14 million impacted members across 18 languages and 190 countries.


You have an avid interest nurturing the work of others and in creating conditions for designers and design managers to succeed. The output of the team is highly collaborative and represents the contributions of numerous specialists and stakeholders, including product managers, data scientists and engineers. Experience design at Virgin Pulse comprises research, system thinking and service design, plus feature-level UI production and visual design. Tasks may range from specifying consumer-style fitness app experiences to the assembly of complex back-end admin interfaces and tools.


Primarily, your daily work  will be a mix of administration, communication, and human-centered mentorship within the design practice. You will help designers perform better by aligning to goals and prioritizing workflow. You will help designers grow by sharing constructive feedback, assessing skills and suggesting areas for growth. And you'll keep designers engaged throughout their career by making their onboarding valuable, recognizing their successes, and partnering with them to improve our shared culture.


This role also involves articulating UX strategy for multiple cross-functional teams while being hands-on to assist with early-stage concept exploration and ideation. Collaborating with other product and engineering leads to address ambiguity is essential. You’ll also interact with stakeholders outside the design group, including end-users, clients and prospects.


In this role you will wear many hats, but your knowledge will be essential in the following:  

• You empower designers to lead. You may occasionally pair or work in combination with other designers, but your focus is on their welfare and productivity
• You are friendly, positive, able to orient toward people and engage in thoughtful, kind ways
• You work with designers in critiques and reviews to ensure quality and cohesion across features
• You are a holistic thinker, problem-framer, and advocate, able to sketch out journeys, shape design sprints and lead product-thinking activities
• You understand complex technical and user challenges and help provide clarity and momentum. You have a deep appreciation and talent for simple solutions
• You are a champion of accessibility, responsive design, native device design standards, and can evangelize this approach to drive better design and engineering outcomes
• You are able to provide cross-org guidance about key features and approaches
• You can define and influence UX operational processes and mechanisms
• You can aid and promote ongoing corporate initiatives (rebranding, quality etc.) where they intersect with the product
• You have demonstrated expertise in working with other managers and designers to identify opportunities for collaboration

What you bring to the Virgin Pulse team

In order to represent the best of what we have to offer you come to us with a multitude of positive attributes including:

  • BA/BS or MA/MS in design, HCI or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 8-10 years in UX Design, including 5 years or more managing direct UX Designer reports
  • Previous domain experience in digital health innovation or related categories including consumer experience and B2B2C SaaS applications
  • Well-versed in Figma, Jira, the Adobe suite and other operational tools and norms
  • Fluency in user-centered design methodology, best practices, and facilitation – and you’re always looking to improve and grow
  • Collaboration skills (across disciplines and departments)
  • Research experience, ability to coordinate and guide user testing sessions, as well as analyze and communicate insights
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, agile environment (while also leading process improvement efforts)
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, able to present (and support) design decisions in a clear and compelling way
