An Overview Creating a Culture of Wellness and Driving Wellness Program Participation

The Horton Group provides insurance, risk management and employee benefit solutions for a variety of companies and industries. Headquartered in Orland Park, Illinois, it has nine offices in four states and employs 300 people. In 2007, looking to change its culture of health and well-being and drive wellness program participation over both the short and long term, The Horton Group began taking small steps to help employees ignite healthy behavior change. One of its top challenges, according to Kevin Herman, Director of Worksite Wellness at The Horton Group, was simply getting employees on the path of improving their lifestyles in the first place.

  • “We’re continually putting things out there that make it easier for people to make the right decisions at work and outside of work to be healthier overall.”

  • “Having a platform that can bring all of our initiatives together has been a huge value to us, and we’ve seen great engagement with our employees. Virgin Pulse helps support all of our other wellness activities with their platform. They all work together and we link more and more things with it. It’s a really cool platform to have and it just continues to grow.”

  • “Healthy employees are more productive employees, and more productive employees make a more fun workplace.”

  • “We hear unsolicited comments from people telling you that their blood pressure‘s gone down, they’ve gotten off their cholesterol meds, different things like that. Basically, with our claims for our employees we’ve pretty much eliminated diabetes complications, heart, and stroke related complications. We just don’t have any of that for years now. We’re preventing the preventable as far we’re concerned, from a claims standpoint.”
